The design challenge was the addition of a fifth floor on an existing four storey masonry building. The existing structure was unreinforced brick masonry on strip footings. The increased vertical loads were managed by ensuring full distribution of the new loads on the existing walls. The window wall on the south face was reinforced for lateral loads with a parged reinforced concrete facing to address the increased earthquake loads and changes in code requirements. The framing of the new floor is conventional composite concrete/steel except for the hung extension of the fourth floor on the south face. The value of the project was approximately 1.3 million.
